This June, we once again felt the power of literacy at our annual gala, Literacy in Bloom. This semi-formal evening celebrated the progress we see every year through the power of learning and connecting.

The 2026 Gala included a one-on-one chat with New York Times bestselling author and acclaimed attorney
His fourteen novels, including Presumed Innocent and Presumed Guilty, have captivated readers worldwide. His next novel, Presumed Dead, is set for release in January 2027.
Evening Highlights
Cocktail Reception and Live Music
Attendees enjoyed drinks and gourmet hors d’oeuvres while chatting with friends and long-time supporters of Literacy Chicago. Chicago-based singer Tiffany Hendrix (@oohlalablessed on Instagram) entertained & enchanted us with her warm, expressive, and velvety voice. The venue was flourished with themed florals provided by Ella’s Essence (ellasessence.com)
Celebrate Award Winning Community Members
We celebrated Literacy Chicago student Deshon Johnson and volunteer Michelle Gill, recipients of the Illinois Secretary of State Student Achievement and Volunteer Service Awards. Chosen as two of only ten student and volunteer honorees statewide each year, they shared powerful stories of perseverance, learning, and success.
Silent Auction and Raffle
Fun prizes were won by purchasing raffle tickets and bidding on silent auction packages. Items this year included but were not limited to: flight vouchers from Southwest Airlines, a studio portrait session with award-winning photographer Kathleen Weinstein (kathleenweinsteinphotography.com) worth $1,000, and tickets to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
