Literacy Chicago’s Executive Board plays a pivotal role in advancing adult education across the city. Board members provide strategic leadership, ensure organizational sustainability, and create pathways for thousands of Chicago adults to achieve their educational and career goals.

Who Are We Looking for in an Executive Board Member?
  • Professional expertise in areas such as finance, legal affairs, fundraising, marketing, corporate partnerships, education, or nonprofit management

  • Strategic vision and the ability to think critically about long-term organizational sustainability

  • Community connections within Chicago's business, philanthropic, or civic sectors

  • Commitment to equity and deep belief in education as a tool for social and economic mobility
Board Member Responsibilities & Duties
  • Guide organizational direction, approve annual budgets, and ensure mission alignment across all programs

  • Participate in fundraising activities, leverage your network, and contribute personally at a level meaningful to you

  • Serve on at least one committee, and uphold fiduciary responsibilities

  • Represent Literacy Chicago in the community and amplify our impact through your professional and personal networks

  • Review financial statements, assess organizational risks, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
Time Commitment and Duties
  • Attend four quarterly meetings annually

  • Attend at least one special event a year

  • Complete project work as needed (approximately 5-8 hours monthly)

  • Provide a direct or in-kind gift of at least $500 per year
